I am beginning to record rap vocals. I have a shure sm58 and I plug it into an older Tascam 4 track, then use the line out stereo to 1/8" In my laptop sound card. Would i be better off puchasing a shure x2u so I can go straight to USB and skip my sound card? I get reletively decent sounds through the tascam... I just want to get the most out of my sm58. Thanks

I would say get the Shure X2U. It's effectively a USB audio interface which I'm sure will give you far better results than going into the laptop soundcard as the componentry in the X2U will be better and built for audio recording.
It'll definitely give you a cleaner sound going in.

I'm sure audacity will be good enough for a starting point for EQ and compression. If you want to buy something with more features and mixing capabilities, try looking at something like Cubase, Pro Tools or Logic (Mac only). I've not really heard a lot about Steinberg audio interfaces, but if you're looking for something better than the Shure, I would recommend either getting a Presonus AudioBox or a Focusrite Saffire 6 for not much more money.

Thanks David. You’ll have an ooriptunpty to join in the future. No worries. In the meantime, feel free to dive deep into the HSC archives.
